Modalities of Psychotherapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a structured, goal-oriented type of psychotherapy, where a mental health professional will assist you in examining how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are related.  Through CBT, you can become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking so you can view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them in a more effective way.

CBT sessions are typically delivered over 12-16 sessions.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

DBT is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach developed from CBT. DBT aims to help people successfully improve their coping skills, by focusing on developing skills focused on mindfulness, distress tolerance, effective communication, and emotion regulation. While participating in therapy sessions individuals are able to develop effective ways to manage and express strong emotions.

DBT sessions are delivered weekly, over 6-12 months or longer.

*Liz has been trained to provide individual DBT sessions, and as DBT skills group facilitator. Currently DBT informed individual therapy is offered, as DBT skills group is not available to offer DBT to fidelity. *

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that is typically provided a treatment for PTSD; however, is shown to be effective in treating Anxiety disorders, Depression disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive disorders, Personality disorders, and Trauma disorders. This form of therapy doesn’t require talking in detail about a distressing issue; however, EMDR focuses on changing the emotions, thoughts or behaviors that result from a distressing experience.

There are 8 phases in EMDR. Phases 1 and 2 are completed in early sessions and focus on developing grounding skills and reviewing life history to develop a targeted sequence plan. Phases 3-8 are held over multiple sessions where reprocessing occurs.

EMDR sessions on average are held 1-2 times weekly, over 6-10 weeks. For complex-trauma length of therapy on average is 8-12 weeks, or more.

Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT)

TF-CBT is  an evidence-based psychotherapy designed for children and adolescents  that aims at addressing the needs of children and adolescents with post traumatic stress disorder and other difficulties related to traumatic life events. This modality of therapy takes place with a non-offending parent or caregiver.  Often, the therapy will begin where the child and non-offending caregiver have separate therapy sessions and advance to engaging in joint sessions. TF-CBT  is completed in phases which includes psychoeducation, relaxation and coping skills, gradual exposure, cognitive processing. Caregiver will be provided skills and consistent involvement is essential for duration of therapy.
